Itinerary: Malang Bromo Ijen tour, with drop off at Ketapang harbour // 3 days & 2 nights
The Malang Bromo Ijen tour will bring you conveniently in 3 days to 2 spectacular volcanoes. These volcanoes can't be compared at all. Bromo arose in an amazing 10 km wide caldera, where black is the dominant colour, while Ijen crater lake with it's turquoise colour is the worlds' largest blue fire area.

Tea or water and sunset over Mount Bromo
Your Bromo Ijen tour starts after breakfast, at 08:00 or 09:00.
The Wonosari tea plantation is a one hour drive from Malang. High in Lawang's mystified mountains, a long time ago a tea plantation was born.
Do you feel more for a visit to the Madakaripura waterfalls? Then it is a 2 to 3 hours drive to the parking lot at the waterfalls. You will have to change transport vehicles. You will get on a motorbike - with driver - and ride in about 15 minutes to the entrance of the waterfall. It is a 30 minutes easy hike. A local guide, obligatory, is coming along... be ready to get wet!
Once back at the car, your friendly driver is waiting for you. Continue to Cemara Lawang village and explore Hindu village life. Refreshing at this height of 2217 m. When the sun is about to set, choose your spot to see the sunset over Mount Bromo.
Then you will be dropped in your hotel as it will be early morning on your second day.
Accommodation
Cafe Lava Hostel - this authentic hostel on the brink of the ancient caldera with 10 km in diameter opened its doors in 1988. It is called hostel as it started with 2 rooms only. As its location is exactly at the rim of the caldera, great views guaranteed.
Each room has its private bathroom with hot water, and no heather (daily average temperature in Cemara Lawang village is 18-19 degrees Celsius - night temperatures vary around 5 to 10 degrees Celsius).

Be ready for your next adventure. A private 4wd Jeep - a Toyota Landcruiser - will pick you up at 03:00.
The magical Bromo. Actually, it is the landscape that makes your jaws drop. A surreal landscape of epic proportions. The black volcanic Sea of Sand and the savanna surrounding the smoking crater of Mount Bromo. The caldera has a diameter of 10 km.
Meet and greet with the sun at the viewpoint at Mount Pananjakan. Sunrises are different every single day. Weather conditions, season and temperatures determine the colours and views during sunrise.
After sunrise, you are heading into the sea of sand to get near mount Bromo. After your Jeep parked it is a 45 minutes walk to the top, the last part is a stair built in ancient times and survived several eruptions. Every now and then look back over your shoulder to admire the ever-changing landscape.
The Luhur Poten temple is an unnatural construction in this marvellous volcanic environment, that will attract your attention. Though, it is seldom open to visitors...
Once back at your Jeep, you will return to Cemara Lawang to have breakfast in your hotel. Have a refreshing shower before checking out and heading to Bondowoso.
To reach Bondowoso you will pass the Arek-Arek hills. You might have a few moments where you would like to stop.
Accommodation
Ijen View Hotel Resort & Restaurant: if you arrive on time, you can plunge into the swimming pool. All rooms have their private bathroom. The hotel has its own restaurant.
Ijen crater lake
Amazing Ijen crater lake, the most acidic lake in the world - drop in Ketapang harbour or Bali
It will be another early morning. But, it will be worth it...
We suggest departing at 03:30 as it is a two hours drive from Bondowoso to Paltuding. Your hike to Ijen crater lake at the top of mount Ijen starts. The hike is only 3.3 km, but you might need more than one hour to get to the top. The hike is scenic though.
At the top, the brownish landscape contrasts beautifully with the turquoise coloured lake. You can't walk around the crater as at some points it is too dangerous.
You will meet the sulphur miners. They start working during the night. They chop loose solidified sulphur at the end of ceramic pipes that are placed in the crater. Then they carry heavy loads out of the crater. Once at the crater rim most miners reload their freight on a trolley and wheel it down Ijen's slopes to the sulphur weighing area behind the parking lot.
When you have fully explored the area and returned to the parking area, you will continue to Ketapang harbour. On route, you can visit Kalibendo coffee area and Jagir waterfall.
Then... your Bromo Ijen tour has come to an end.
Note: if you wish to see the blue flames, you will have to depart around midnight as it can only be seen when it is dark. Your driver or guide will inform about the local conditions and the activity of the volcano. It is obligatory to do the hike during the night with a local guide. He will bring your gas mask. Please bring a torch and some warming clothes. Also, be aware of the fact that hiking into Ijen's crater officially isn't allowed at any time. Therefore this part of the tour will be at your own risk.
Also, understand that the official advice of the Indonesian Volcanology is to keep a distance of 1km from the lake.
